w/ Maral

A close up photo of the body of Maral's sitar made out of a dark wood in front of an out of focus gray background.

A conversation and music curation featuring Los Angeles based musician, Maral. Together, Callie and Maral will discuss the potential for music to act as a bridge opening up acknowledgement and symbiotic care with ancestors and rituals of one’s lineage. The sonic quilt of this episode is woven together by relics of sound sacred to both contributor’s hearts + roots

Guest: Maral

Maral is standing behind a CDJ DJ setup. She is looking down at the DJ mixer, adjusting knobs with her right hand while the other is placed on the CDJ. She has long brown/black hair, a long sleeve black top on and a light pink hat on her head. Her background is a blurry image of the lights in front of LACMA: many white tall street lights in a row.

Los Angeles-based artist Maral has formed a unique vision of club music, one that embraces her heritage and recontextualizes it for a new audience. Focusing on the interplay between sounds and culture she combines Iranian folk field recordings with raw distorted beats, hoping it will introduce listeners to new ways of perceiving music. Taking the old and making it new.As a DJ, she enjoys exploring music from around the world and showcasing the hidden gems from the past and present. Through her music and involvement in the scene, Maral seeks to both educate and have a positive impact on others.
